Scouts Safeguarding Policy

During the COVID 2020 lockdown, one of our Point families, the dubP whānau, wondered why we have policies which no one ever reads – and why policies for children are so inaccessible to the very people who need to understand them – the children themselves. Tired of zooms and Netfix videos, and with a household of restless creative young people, the dubPs decided to take the Scouts Child Safeguarding policy and turn it into a children’s story (thanks Eloise and Vicki), complete with illustrations (thanks Jay).

This policy is critical as it is designed to keep children safe. Scouts Aotearoa has adopted this as their official safeguarding policy and the book is shared with every Scouts group in Aotearoa. It is dedicated to all the brave kids who share their stories, to those who couldn’t, and to those who are yet to.  We hope it makes a difference to children who feel unsafe and to those who support them. And we hope this proof of concept is just the start, as every policy for children should be able to be read and understood by them. Our Point fam can help with this.
